Code to Joy Forward by Larry King

The twentieth century had its share of medical miracles.  I should know.  When you've survived a heart attack, had quintuple bypass surgery, and you're still going strong a quarter-century later, it gives you a pretty healthy appreciation for modern medicine. Still, there are some aspects of the human condition medicine can't touch.  Or at least it couldn't until now.  Modern medicine has made us a lot healthier—but what about happier?  That may be where the frontier of medicine lies in this still young century.  And [...]

Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

By Dr. George Pratt As another new year approaches, people across San Diego are resolving to lose weight, exercise more, manage stress and make other changes improve their health and life. According to an article in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 40 to 45 percent of American adults make resolutions—but just two weeks later, only 71 percent are still sticking to them. Neanderthals Never Used Freeways – from Hyper-Performance by Drs. Pratt & Korn

Neanderthals never used freeways or they would likely have been plagued by many of the same stress related illnesses we have in our present society. We inherited our fight or flight reaction from our primitive ancestors who were more worried about sabre-toothed tigers and dinosaurs than adjustable rate mortgages and traffic snarls on the way to work. Fortunately for them, the tiger or tyrannosaurus was either fought or fled from, and the biochemical responses to those threatening situations usually subsided within a few hours. Unfortunately [...]

Hypnosis: Myths & Realities – from A Clinical Hypnosis Primer by Dr. Pratt et al.

The word “hypnosis” has many connotations. For some people, it conjures up visions of a stage entertainer who uses hypnosis to make volunteers behave foolishly for the audience’s amusement. At the other extreme are those who, in our self-help era, see hypnosis as a quick and easy cure-all for their problems, from smoking to chronic back pain. Hypnosis is neither a tool to control other minds nor a panacea. It is, rather, a natural phenomenon that helps people harness their inner resources to improve their [...]

Hypnosis: Historical Roots – from A Clinical Hypnosis Primer by Dr. Pratt et al.

The historical pathway leading to the present understanding of hypnosis is long and uneven, with apparent dead-ends and switchback trails along the way. It is a path people have created over an extended period of time out of quite different philosophies, beliefs, and scientific orientations, coming from diverse national backgrounds, and with varied motives. Early accounts of phenomena that may have been what we now call hypnotic can be found in such sources as the Bible, the Talmud, and a 3000-year-old Egyptian stone stele. A [...]
