Developing gratitude is a practice that holds the power to transform our lives from within. The act of exercising one’s gratitude muscle can “profoundly change your brain.” You are literally programming a portion of your brain to look for what’s right about your life instead of what’s wrong. It’s the reticular activating system (RAS), and it filters all the sensory information our brains draw from the world. As you retrain your RAS, your brain makes a subtle shift in priorities. In short, you become more aware of those things in your life that are positive.
Below are some of the benefits to use of cultivating gratitude.
Shifting Perspective
Enhancing Well-Being
Building Resilience
Strengthening Relationships
Fostering Optimism
Creating a Ripple Effect
Action to Take
I suggest starting this transformative practice by starting a gratitude list. The idea is to start with one or two dozen items. List a variety of blessings from friends and family to health and shelter. Read or review it at about the same time every day and add an item. Start your list today and keep adding to it.
It’s easy to overlook the abundance and beauty that already surrounds us. However, by consciously developing gratitude, we open ourselves to a profound shift in perspective—a shift that can transform our lives and bring forth a sense of contentment, joy, and fulfillment.
